Here is a painting, in the public domain, from WikiMedia, of St. Anthony Falls in the 1800s. Sad to compare it to the modern smooth version. However, the limestone sheet that formed its lip ended shortly upstream, so if the falls had not been "concreted," it would have migrated to the end of the limestone and degenerated into rapids:

First below is an old flour mill, recently partially destroyed by fire or deterioration. Mpls. decided to save it, so it was shored up in front, and the back was turned into a mill museum. Very cool. There is a freight elevator with benches where tourists sit. It stops on about 7 floors, the doors open, and the tourists are treated to a display, some with live people, of flour mill activity.
